Thantophobia – The Fear of Death

Thantophobia is a strong fear of death that happens when there is actually no danger at all. While it is normal for most people to experience fear of death now and then, the fear in Thantophobia is somewhat unreasonable. And as the Thantophobic is aware of this, he or she may try to avoid situations that trigger the fear.

Symptoms

Fear of death that causes breathlessness, extreme sweating, dryness of mouth, sickness, trembling, heart palpitations, confused state of mind, a feeling of disconnection from reality, a fear of losing control, or a total panic attack.

Diagnosis

As Thanatophobia is a very complex issue that may have various possible sources, it is important to get it diagnosed by an experienced mental health doctor. This diagnosis may involve the questioning of the sufferer to find out the causes of the problem. Once the symptoms are clearly examined, the patient will be prescribed an appropriate treatment course.

Treatment

Apart from the symptoms, the treatment also depends on the subject and his/her purpose of going for the therapy. Depending on these factors, various treatments can be used. This includes talk therapy solutions that range from psychoanalytic to cognitive behavioral. Also, the subject can be given auxiliary religious counseling and other therapeutic alternatives in parallel to the main treatment.

  1. Good info. Thanks for the information shared here about phobias. I too fear a lot because of water and darkness. I cant enjoy with anything in my life with that fear. Later I have consulted a good Hypnotherapist whom I came to know from Thoughts Become Reality - Hypnosis. After consulting him and attending various hypnotherapy techniques I can realized lot of good changes in my self confidence and self control.
